About Toyota

The Toyota Motor Company has come a long way from producing textiles and looms in 1890. Sakichi Toyoda was awarded patent No. 1195 for the batten-equipped tail loom. But he soon focused on Japan’s first self-powered loom in 1898 and rightfully christened it the Toyoda Power Loom. His son, Kiichiro Toyoda, followed in his father’s footsteps by inventing the automatic loom. But Kiichiro had more than textiles in mind. The Toyoda Automatic Loom Works was suddenly equipped with high-precision machinery in preparation for the foray into automobile manufacturing.

Kiichiro Toyoda is a big fan of the U.S. and UK automotive industry. He spent a lot of time overseas to study the automobile manufacturing plants abroad. When Ford established Ford-Japan in 1924 and General Motor’s GM-Japan plant in Osaka in 1927, there was an urgency in establishing the local Japanese automotive manufacturing industry. The Toyota Motor Company Ltd. was established in 1937 after releasing the Model A1 passenger car prototype in 1935. During this time, Toyota was also hard at work testing the Model G1 truck prototype. Eventually, the Model A1 passenger car and the Model G1 truck were launched to the public in 1936.

The Toyopet Crown was introduced in 1955. In 1957, the Crown became the first Japanese car to be exported in the United States. The world first set eyes on the Toyota Corolla in 1966 while the famed Toyota 2000GT sports car was unveiled in 1967. The first Toyota Camry saw the light of day in 1988 followed by the launch of the Lexus LS 400 in 1989. Toyota introduced the Prius hybrid car in 1997.

Upon hearing the ‘Toyota’ nameplate, the first thing that comes to mind is the sterling reputation for quality and reliability. Wild thoughts about the aggressive Toyota Celica, Toyota Supra, and Corolla AE86 also comes to mind. The Japanese carmaker is amongst the world’s largest automakers next to Volkswagen and Nissan-Renault.

The Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla are the bestselling compact and midsize cars in the United States.
